Sur fond blanc is an album of electronic music that explores the themes of interior space, emptiness and absence. Electronic textures, soundscapes, rhythms and bursts of voice reveal fragments of thoughts, memories and humanity. In this unique and ambiguous voyage, listeners are free to create their own imagined setting. With this second album, the duo presents music that is rigorous, sensitive and intimate.
Sur fond blanc stems from a sound score originally composed by Bernier and Poulin-Denis for the choreography La chambre blanche by O Vertigo dance company.
Composers Nicolas Bernier and Jacques Poulin-Denis began their collaboration in 2006. Both members of the Ekumen collective, they take part in several areas of media art, including electronic music, instrumental music, soundscapes, sound performance, video art, contemporary dance an theater. Their eclectic background allows them to focus their collaboration on music for stage performances, working with choreographers Ginette Laurin, Tony Chong, Mélanie Demers and Harold Rhéaume. The duo's inspiration is the result of a continual dialogue, material-sharing and neuron transference, confrontation, and simultaneous sound experimentation. In 2007, the pair launched the album Etude no.3 pour cordes et poulies, which is available on ekumen.com.
